On some occasions, Wolf crews work in isolation. They are cut off from the public and never see or meet anyone from the community they are working alongside. On other, more visible to the public projects, we are front and center to the members of the community, neighbors, and property owners. Often our crews will meet and socialize with them regularly to get to know them and their stories. Once that connection is made, that respect is established, it makes for a much easier and safer environment for both our crews and the community. We look out for each other, even if they don’t work for Wolf.
Recently one morning while on a jobsite, members of a Wolf crew noticed a gentleman outside his house smoking a cigarette and drinking his coffee while standing under the American flag in his front yard. As some of our guys are military veterans, they went over and struck up a conversation with him and found out that he too is a retired army veteran. Swapping stories, they got to know him better and got to know his story. Most mornings they would see him outside during his morning ritual and occasionally visit with him. He had never been anything but friendly to the Wolf crew working next door.
One day they noticed they had not seen him that morning. The next day he was absent again and this piqued their interest. They noticed that his flag was on the ground, and his vehicle had not moved the previous couple days. Now concerned, members of the crew went over to his house, picked up the flag and went to check on him. Knocking on the door several times they did not receive an answer.
Being concerned for his health and safety, the crew called the local police and asked that they perform a wellness check on him. Police and EMS arrived shortly and they were able to get into the house and make contact with him. He was found in distress in the home, unconscious and on the floor, and was taken immediately to the hospital by ambulance. He was stabilized at the hospital and taken care of. He was treated and released a couple days later. Upon his return, he was grateful and thanked our crew for noticing his absence and getting help for him.
It is easy to just go to work, do your job, collect a paycheck, and pretty much ignore what’s going on around you as it is “not your job”. It takes a specific personality to also look out for others even when it’s not your responsibility. Thanks to this Wolf crew meeting and talking with this veteran, and getting to know his story, they were able to help him during a very bad day that could have ended up much worse.
